Dhanteras - Things to avoid buying today

 Dhanteras 2024, celebrated on October 29, marks the beginning of Diwali's five-day festivities in India. Known as Dhanatrayodashi, this festival is observed with great enthusiasm, where devotees pay homage to Lord Kubera, Goddess Lakshmi, and Lord Dhanvantari. The primary focus of Dhanteras is to seek blessings for wealth and health, making it an important day in the Hindu calendar.


On this auspicious occasion, it is customary to purchase precious metals, particularly gold and silver, as these are believed to bring prosperity and good fortune. Buying household items such as utensils and broomsticks is also considered lucky. Shopping on Dhanteras symbolizes the welcoming of wealth and abundance into one’s home, reinforcing the day's significance in promoting prosperity.

However, while many items are deemed auspicious to purchase, certain things should be avoided on Dhanteras to ensure that the day remains beneficial. A list of items is recommended to steer clear of, which includes:

  1. Scissors - Generally associated with cutting or severing ties, scissors are not considered a good omen for the day.

  2. Knives - Similar to scissors, knives are linked to the idea of violence or harm, making them inappropriate for purchase.

  3. Items made of glass - Glass items are fragile and represent breakage, which is viewed as unfavourable on this auspicious day.

  4. Pins - Sharp objects like pins can symbolize injury or bad luck, thus they should be avoided.

  5. Completely black items - The colour black is often associated with negativity and is thought to invite misfortune.

  6. Plastic products - These are often viewed as impure or of lesser value, making them unsuitable for purchase during this sacred time.

  7. Oil - Oil is linked to darkness and negative energy, so buying it is traditionally avoided on Dhanteras.

  8. Ghee - Though ghee is a significant substance in Hindu rituals, purchasing it on this day is often discouraged.

  9. Broken items - Anything that is broken symbolizes a lack of prosperity and should not be brought into the home.

  10. Aluminium utensils - Similar to plastic, aluminium is considered inferior and not worthy of being purchased during this auspicious occasion.

The observance of these guidelines enhances the spiritual significance of Dhanteras, allowing devotees to align their actions with the positive energy they seek.
